Upset! BYU beats St Mary’s to advance to WCC tournament finals

ONE MORE WIN!!

NCAA Basketball: West Coast Conference Tournament-Saint Mary's vs BYU Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

Las Vegas, Nevada — Upset!!

BYU led nearly the entire game, as the Cougars pulled the 85-72 upset win over #22 St Mary’s in the WCC tournament semifinals.

Yoeli Childs was a monster all night, as the sophomore big man finished with 33 points (3-3 from three). Elijah Bryant was his steady self as he finished with 25 points, including 8-8 from the foul line.

BYU’s offense was humming all night, as the Cougar offense shot a blistering 62% from the field. Dalton Nixon was a huge spark off the bench, with the sophomore scoring 10 points and added 6 boards. Nixon had a big moment in the first half when he drew the 3rd foul on Jock Landale on an and-1 play.

Speaking of Landale, BYU held Landale in check and got the big Aussie in foul trouble. Landale finished with 23 points, but many of those came late when BYU was well on its way to a win. With Landale picking up 3 first half fouls, BYU was able to attack the basket against a passive Landale.

BYU now has the task of knocking off a red-hot Gonzaga team that is playing its best ball of the season. With no shot at an-large bid, BYU needs just one more win to clinch an NCAA tournament birth.

BYU will take on the Zags 7pm MST on ESPN.
