Arizona begins game prep for BYU, preparing for 2 Quarterbacks

With BYU-Arizona just 11 days away, fall camp is wrapping up for both teams and game prep is in the beginning stages.

Kalani Sitake told media yesterday that the team has started watching film of Arizona, and Arizona defensive coordinator Marcel Yates stated that the Wildcats have begun preparing for BYU as well.

Yates was asked about the BYU starting QB situation yesterday and if he knew who would be BYU’s starter. “We have an idea... We know it’s gonna be one or two of these guys, so we’re getting ready for both.”

Yates was obviously referring to Tanner Mangum and Zach Wilson, who coaches reiterated yesterday are still competing for the starting QB job.

With Arizona preparing for two QB’s, BYU may elect to not publicly name a starter before the game. Coaches have hinted they may keep things tight-lipped leading up to the game so Arizona is forced to prepare for both guys.

With Tanner being more of a pocket passer and Zach having more mobility, the contrasting styles may give BYU a bit of an edge if Arizona is forced to prepare to two different QB styles leading up to the game.

BYU-Arizona play Saturday, September 1 at 7:45 PDT on ESPN.

Yates’ comments can be viewed below, starting at the 27-second mark.
