After playing three different QB’s in their season opener versus North Carolina, Cal listed 3 QB’s as the potential starter in their newly released depth chart prior to Saturday’s BYU game.

Junior QB Ross Bowers started 12 games last season and got the starting nod versus UNC, but Bowers had trouble moving the offense as he finished 8/17 for 56 yards and no TD’s. Bowers threw for 3,309 yards to go along with 18 TD’s and 12 picks last season.
Redshirt freshman Chase Garbers came in the second half and gave the offense a bit of a spark with his running ability. Garbers finished 7/13 for for 54 passing yards and a touchdown, and added 39 rushing yards on 10 carries.
Sophomore Brandon McIlwain got the least amount of reps, as he finished 9 passing yards to go with 26 rushing yards.
Cal’s offense struggled against a short-handed UNC defense that had multiple starters suspended, so it will be interesting to see if they can improve from last Saturday’s performance on the road versus a BYU defense that has a lot of confidence.
My guess is that Cal goes with incumbent starter Ross Bowers, but will quickly pull him in favor of freshman Chase Garbers if the Cal offense struggles.
BYU-Cal kick off 8:15 MST on ESPN2.
