BYU’s hot three-point shooting cooled down Saturday night, but the Cougars made enough plays down the stretch to beat Oral Roberts 79-73 in the Marriott Center.
Yoeli Childs had 23 points and Jake Toolson had 22 points to lead BYU; the Cougars came into the game as one of the top three-point shooting teams in the country, but shot only 9-30 (30%) from deep on the night. Oral Roberts’ physicality inside gave BYU trouble and kept them in the game. They out-rebounded BYU 46-37 and had a 18-5 edge in second chance points.
Oral Roberts tied the game at 67 with under 3 minutes left, but a clutch three from Jake Toolson and tough defense down the stretch helped BYU prevail.
BYU ends non-conference play at 11-4 and in solid position to get an at-large NCAA bid. BYU’s three best wins of non-conference play were Utah State, Houston and Virginia Tech.
The Cougars open up WCC play next Saturday at home versus LMU.
