14-seed BYU women's volleyball swept New Mexico State on Friday evening at the Smith Fieldhouse (25-7, 25-23, 25-19).
The Cougars dominated the first set, holding the Aggies to just seven points. With the score 8-6 for the Cougars, Whitney Bower served 19 straight serves as the Cougars went on a 19-1 run to win the set 25-7.
The second set was much closer, with the Aggies unwilling to let BYU extend the lead. BYU held on in a tight one, winning 25-23.
The Aggies would take an early lead in the third set, and the Cougars had a hard time getting over the hump and taking a lead on the Aggies. Finally they broke through, winning the set by 6 points in the end to complete the sweep.
BYU hit .386 and had 8 service aces in the dominant sweep. The win moves BYU to the second round against Utah at the Smith Fieldhouse. The Utes beat Illinois in five sets Friday afternoon. BYU won the earlier match this season at the Huntsman Center 3-1.
The second round is Saturday night at 7 p.m. MST.
