BYU Volleyball was swept at UC Santa Barbara (22-25, 22-25, 20-25) on Friday night, dropping a match for the first time this season.

The third-ranked Cougars were plagued with service errors all evening in their first match in two weeks. From the start, the Cougars and Gauchos traded points, and the Cougars could not find any rhythm. None of the Cougars found success in their service, and ended the night with 20 service errors. On top of that, the Cougars allowed the Gauchos nine aces in the match, tied for most they’ve allowed all season.

When on the attack against the Gauchos, the Cougars struggled to find space on the floor, due in large part to the Gauchos defense. The Cougars did have 9.5 blocks on the evening, but it wasn’t enough to spark any momentum for the Cougars.

Gabi Garcia Fernandez led the Cougars with 13 kills, while Corey Chavers led the Gauchos’ attack with 17 kills.

The third-ranked Cougars are now 4-1 on the season, and will play the second half of the back-to-back with the Gauchos at 7 pm PST on Saturday. The game can be watched on bigwest.tv.
