San Diego, California — BYU overcame a 14-point second half deficit to beat San Diego 88-82 in overtime Thursday night.
TJ Haws and Yoeli Childs carried the load for BYU, as the duo combined for 62 points. TJ Haws had a career high 35 points to go along with 7 assists and 1 turnover. TJ made numerous clutch plays late in regulation and overtime, coming up with tough baskets when BYU needed him most. Yoeli was no slouch either, finishing with 27 points and 12 rebounds.
After coming all the back from 14 points, BYU nearly blew the game at the end of regulation. BYU shot 3/9 from the foul line in the final 3:15, and allowed San Diego guard Isaiah Wright to get a wide open layup to send the game to overtime.
The defense tightened up in overtime, however, and TJ came up with multiple clutch plays for BYU to come away to the victory.
Overall, big win for BYU as they try to keep pace for the second seed in the WCC. San Diego was a 3-point favorite coming in, and BYU took care of business to remain 1.5 games ahead of the pack in the race for second place. BYU’s next game is Saturday afternoon at LMU.
