BYU Volleyball: Cougars drop both matches in California trip

BYU Volleyball dropped its two matches at Concordia-Irvine and USC on Thursday and Friday last week.

The Cougars have struggled on the road all season, winning just one match in their eight true road games thus far this season. The Cougars have one road match left in the regular season at Grand Canyon in Phoenix this Thursday. All of the Cougars’ road losses came in California, where they struggled immensely and went a terrible 0-7, winning just four sets in those seven matches.

Thursday the Cougars faced Concordia-Irvine, who the Cougars swept earlier in the season at the Smith Fieldhouse. The Cougars were led by Gabi Garcia Fernandez, who’s career high 31 kills were not enough to get the Cougars past the Eagles, as they lost in five sets (20-25, 27-25, 25-22, 21-25, 13-15). The Cougars hit well on the night, but couldn’t find a way to get the victory after winning the third set and taking a 2-1 lead.

On Saturday night, the Cougars were swept by USC (20-25, 22-25, 21-25). The Cougars went down 14-10, before the Trojans extended the lead to 19-14. USC would win the set 25-20. The second set was dominated early by the Trojans, who lead by as many as eight in the set. The Cougars would cut the lead to two, but would lose the set on the next point. The third set was back and forth, before the Cougars went up 14-13, but the Trojans would outlast the Cougars and win the set 25-21.

BYU finishes up the regular season at Grand Canyon on Thursday at 7 pm MST.
