BYU fans got the best piece of off-season basketball news last night when it was announced that forward Yoeli Childs would be returning for his senior season. Not even 24 hours later we get the announcement from the WCC about the hoops matchups for the 2019-20 season. Who knew that May was such a big month for college basketball!
This will be the second year with the revised West Coast Conference regular season schedule that has each team only playing 16 conference games. Instead of playing every team twice (home and away) for a total of 18 games, this allows the top teams in the conference to play a pair of the lowest ranked teams once. In their press release the WCC stated, “These schedule initiatives demonstrate the league-wide commitment by West Coast Conference Presidents and Athletic Directors to adopt an innovative approach to advance men’s basketball on the national stage as a multiple NCAA bid Conference.”
Based on the release BYU will face the following teams:
Home/Road: Gonzaga, LMU, Pepperdine, Portland, Saint Mary’s, San Diego, San Francisco
Home: Santa Clara
Road: Pacific
The full schedule, including dates and times, will be released at a later date but this gives us a good idea of what the matchups will look like. The Cougars only matchup with Pacific will come on the road in Stockton, a place where BYU has experienced some struggles as of late. Last year BYU as able to sneak out a 90-87 comeback win and in 2017-18 they lost to the Tigers.
