Countdown to Kickoff (75): Watch Jake Oldroyd make a 42-yard, no-step field goal

NCAA Football: Arizona vs Brigham Young Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

We previewed BYU’s kicker position a couple weeks that will see incumbent Skyler Southam and Jake Oldroyd compete for the starting position. Oldroyd competed in Spring ball after returning from his LDS mission, and it looks like he’s shaken off the mission rust. (Side note: Do kickers need to shake off mission rust?)

Here’s a video former BYU punter Jonny Linehan posted of Oldroyd kicking a 42-yard, no step field goal.

A 42-yard field goal obviously isn’t anything special for a college kicker, but kicking one without stepping into it all seems dang impressive. Who knows at this point whether Oldroyd or Southam will win the starting job, but Oldroyd seems to have the leg strength to win the job.
