BYU Football Media Day: Recap of State of the Program

NCAA Football: Brigham Young at Utah Jeff Swinger-USA TODAY Sports

Many people went into the BYU Football Media hoping that a new contract with ESPN would be announced by Athletic Director Tom Holmoe. During the State of the Program broadcast, an interview between Dave McCann and Holmoe revealed that there is not currently a new deal in place. Both McCann and Holmoe revealed that while BYU is pleased with the deal as it is written regarding the regular season games, there are still negotiations that need to be made regarding the bowl games. Holmoe made it sound like BYU may be negotiating a tiered bowl agreement; i.e., BYU will play in a better bowl game if it finishes with a certain amount of wins.

The other news that Cougar fans were looking for was any new information on was any new information about quarterback Zach Wilson’s shoulder. Wilson himself reported that, “Recovery is going good. I’m 100 percent on schedule for where I’m supposed to be.” Also returning from shoulder surgeries are tight end, and leading receiver two seasons running, Matt Bushman and linebacker Zayne Anderson. All three reported they will be good to go on August 29 in time to take on Utah.

One announcement that will be really exciting is the addition of Cougar Canyon. Canyon road, which runs to the West of LaVell Edwards Stadium, will be turned into a live entertainment and tailgating area. According to David Almodova, Cougar Canyon will have live music and interactive sponsor areas.
