Countdown to Kickoff (43): Vegas sets BYU’s over/under win total at 7

NCAA Football: Brigham Young at Washington Jennifer Buchanan-USA TODAY Sports

Apparently it’s gambling season at Vanquish the Foe. After going into individual game betting lines yesterday, we dive into BYU’s over/under win total today.

The Las Vegas Westgate Superbook set BYU’s regular season win total (does not include bowl game performance) at 7 games. The over seven games is +100 odds while the under seven games is -120 odds. In short, the +100 means you need to bet $100 to win $100, while the -120 means you need to bet $120 to win $100. So, the under bet is seen as the slightly more likely outcome.

Here is how I see the tiers of BYU’s likelihood to win.

Likely wins (3): Liberty, UMass, Idaho State

Slight Favorites (3): Toledo, South Florida, San Diego State

Toss ups (2): Boise State and Utah State

Underdogs (4): Utah, Tennessee, USC, Washington

If BYU can go 7-1 in the first 3 categories and win 1 of the 4 in which they’re underdogs, that’s 8 wins there. Not easy, but doable. If I was a betting man, I would take the over and say BYU goes 8-4 in the regular season. BYU is improved over last season and isn’t more than a 6-point underdog in any of its games.

Below are other over/under totals for BYU opponents:

Utah: 9

Tennessee: 6.5

USC: 7

Washington: 9.5

Boise State: 9.5

Utah State: 6.5

San Diego State: 8.5
