BYU opened the season with a win on the road in SEC territory, defeating the Alabama Crimson Tide in Tuscaloosa by a score of 1-0.
The Cougars came out strong, pressing the Tide in their half. After a couple incomplete early crosses, the Cougars finally found someone in the box. Junior Mikayla Colohan took the ball at the top of the box and finished past Alabama goalkeeper Alex Plavin in the 9th minute.
Alabama settled into the match after the Cougars’ early opener, and pressed BYU high into the Cougars’ defensive third. The press created issues for the Cougars, but they would make it to halftime without conceding a goal. The Cougars took a 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
The second half opened chippy, with the Cougars and Tide trading fouls. While the Tide held possession in the opening five minutes of the half, the Cougars settled back in and controlled possession over the next five minutes. The Cougars would dominate the remainder of the match, opening the season with a victory.
The Cougars will stay in the South to face Mississippi St on Saturday night.
