The hype around BYU and Zach Wilson isn’t going away.
Vegas updated its Heisman Trophy odds on Sunday and pegged Zach Wilson among its leaders at 20/1 odds — i.e., bet $1 to win $20. Those odds put Zach at tied for the sixth best odds. Below are the 10 leaders:
Kyle Trask (Florida) — 4/1
Trevor Lawrence (Clemson) — 4/1
D’Eriq King (Miami) — 6/1
Justin Fields (Ohio State) — 6/1
Mac Jones (Alabama) — 14/1
Zach Wilson (BYU) — 20/1
KJ Costello (Mississippi State) — 20/1
Shane Buchele (SMU) — 20/1
Sam Ehlinger (Texas) — 25/1
Spencer Rattler (Oklahoma) — 25/1
BYU has played less-than-stellar competition, but Wilson’s numbers through three games and the types of throws he is making have him on the national radar. He’s completed 60/71 passes (84.5%) for 949 yards, 6 touchdowns and 1 interception. He’s also ran for an additional 5 touchdowns, which means he has the same number of incompletions as total touchdowns.
If Zach continues to put up video game numbers and BYU continues to blow out opponents, Zach will likely continue to stay in the Heisman conversation.
As we’ve seen as BYU fans over the years, however, hype can dissipate in an instant with one unexpected loss or an untimely break. National media is feeding much of the BYU hype, but we can only hope that BYU players and coaches are not drinking it up. One loss to Houston in less than 2 weeks and BYU will fall out of the national conversation.
In the famous words of BYU OL Coach Eric Mateos, “Don’t drink the poison.”
