Vegas updated its latest Heisman Trophy odds and pegged Zach Wilson with the fourth highest odds. Ohio State QB Justin Fields and Alabama QB have the highest odds at 3/2 with Clemson QB Trevor Lawerence right behind them at 2/1 odds. Those 3 are the clear front runners, but Zach Wilson is next in line at 30/1 odds. After Zach, there is another big with 3 guys at 50/1 odds.
Wilson has put up eye-popping numbers through seven games, throwing for 2152 yards, 19 TDs, 2 interceptions and completing 74.6% of his passes. He’s also rushed for 150 yards and leads all quarterbacks nationally with 7 rushing TDs.
Friday’s game at Boise State gives him an opportunity to close the gap with the three guys ahead of him. BYU-Boise State is one of the three best games of the weekend and is in a prime time spot Friday night. Heisman Trophy voters and pollsters around the country will be watching BYU and Wilson to see how they respond in their biggest test of the season.
If BYU can first and foremost win and Wilson looks impressive doing so, he could cement himself as a Heisman Trophy finalist next month. BYU hasn’t had a Heisman Trophy finalist since Ty Detmer won the award 30 years ago.
We don’t know what games will be cancelled moving forward — Trevor Lawrence will miss his second consecutive game on Saturday due to COVID — so if BYU keeps winning and Zach keeps performing, the Heisman dream won’t go away.
