Heartbreak.
BYU came in with hopes of a New Year’s 6 bowl, but those were dashed Saturday night as BYU fell to Coastal Carolina on the teal turf 22-17. Zach Wilson BYU drove down the field with under one minute left, but Dax Milne was one-yard short of the goal line as time expired.
BYU had no answers for Coastal Carolina’s spread option attack, as the Chanticleers milked the clock and dominated at the line of scrimmage all night. Coastal Carolina had 37:51 in time of possession compared to BYU’s 22:02. 281 of Coastal’s 366 yards were on the ground as BYU had no answer for CCU’s ground game. A lot of talk going into the game was BYU’s size advantage up front, but BYU was outclassed in the trenches.
This game will haunt BYU for a long time. BYU travelled across the country on short notice with hopes of a NY6 bowl, now the Cougars will have to settle for whatever bowl comes their way later this month.
BYU will close out the season at home next week at home versus San Diego State.
