Relentless.
BYU men’s volleyball is something special this 2020 season. Saturday nght in Provo, BYU won a thrilling come-from-behind five set thriller against #2 UC Santa Barbara. The second game in the 2-game series was anyone’s from the taking, but BYU was not about to allow the Gauchos to taint their perfect record.
After dropping the first set 23-25, BYU came out on top with a tough 25-22 win in set 2. Nothing came easy for the Cougars tonight, who worked for every point against the Gauchos. A loss in the third set put the pressure on, but BYU again prevailed with a nerve-racking fourth set win.
After going up 24-23 with a chance to win the set, the Gauchos scored two straight to set up a match point. But two errors by the Gauchos led to a Gabi Garcia Fernandez set point serve, which he blasted at the Gauchos, who were unable to get the ball back. The ace was one of eight on the night for BYU, but none were more important than this one from Garcia Fernandez.
After forcing the fifth set, BYU looked destined to win. The Cougars burst out to a 11-4 lead, and took that to a 15-11 set win to win their 10th game out of 10 on the season.
BYU’s 3-2 win moves them to 8-0 against Top 15 teams on the season and 10-0 overall. The season won’t get easier from here, however, as BYU faces conference foes UCLA and Pepperdine in what are sure to be tough matchups for the Cougars.
BYU will play Thursday at the Smith Fieldhouse, hosting UCLA. The game will be available on BYUtv.
