Go ahead and exhale, BYU fans.

Yoeli Childs converted a TJ Haws alley-oop pass with 11 seconds left and San Diego missed a three pointer at the buzzer as BYU escaped with a 72-71 win over the Toreros.

Childs and Haws led BYU with 17 points each and TJ added 10 assists to pace the Cougars. San Diego came into the game as the best three-point shooting defense in the WCC and proved it with solid defense around the arc. BYU shot 9-24 (37.5%) from distance and never really got into a good offensive rhythm the whole night.

Dalton Nixon missed the game after suffering a severely sprained ankle at LMU and will likely miss at least a couple weeks. Gavin Baxter’s minutes were increased as a result, but the sophomore big man is still finding his footing on both ends of the floor.

BYU next heads home for a Thursday night game versus Santa Clara and a huge matchup versus #2 Gonzaga on Senior Night next Saturday. With multiple teams losing ahead of BYU, the Cougars could sneak into the AP Top 25 poll next week.
