No. 14 BYU, who earned the two seed in the WCC tournament and therefore a double bye, will play three-seed Saint Mary’s in Las Vegas on Monday Night.
The BYU Cougars last played on Feb. 29 at Pepperdine, where they won 81-64. BYU has won nine games in a row and finds itself in the top 10 for NET rankings (no. 9) this week, in addition to the top-15 ranking.
Saint Mary’s made its first appearance in the WCC Tournament in the quarterfinals against Pepperdine on Saturday night, though the game did not end until early Sunday morning. The Gaels defeated the Pepperdine Waves 89-82 in 2 overtimes at the Orleans Arena in a game where Pepperdine’s Colbey Ross scored 43 points and SMC’s Jordan Ford scored 42.
BYU is 24-7 overall headed into this semifinal matchup, with a 13-3 conference record. One of those conference losses did come at Saint Mary’s. The Gaels are 25-7 overall after their victory over Pepperdine, and have an 11-5 conference record — With one of those conference losses coming to BYU.
The Cougars and Gaels saw each other for the first time this season in Moraga on Jan. 9. The Gaels were coming off of a 4OT loss at Pacific, but still beat BYU in OT, 87-84. BYU’s Yoeli Childs missed that game due to a finger injury. The two teams next met at the Marriott Center on Feb. 1. It was another thriller, with BYU winning on a TJ Haws last-minute three pointer, 81-79.
Five-seed San Francisco and one-seed Gonzaga are on the other side of the WCC Tournament bracket and will play before BYU/SMC. The winners of each game will face off for the tournament championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament on Tuesday night.
