BYU won in Moraga for the first time since 2014 and snapped a 6-game road losing streak to the Gaels in a 62-52 win over Saint Mary’s. BYU was behind for a majority of the game, but the Cougars ended the game on a 17-2 run to take down the Gaels.
BYU won this game with defense and absolutely stifled SMC down the stretch. St Mary’s went up 50-45 with 10:36 left and scored only two points the rest of the way. After those points, BYU had a stretch with 12 straight defensive stops and didn’t allow the Gaels to score until 45 seconds left in the game. BYU brought in Gideon George off the bench and his length shut down St Mary’s point guard Tommy Kuhse and threw off the flow of SMC’s entire offense.
Alex Barcello was the lone BYU player in double figures, leading the team with 14 points and committing zero turnovers. Matt Haarms and Brandon Averette each chipped in 9 points and Gideon George added 8 points off the bench. BYU shot 1-10 from three, but they had only 8 turnovers and shot 44% overall from the field compared to 38% shooting from St Mary’s.
St Mary’s came into the came ranked 61 in the NET rankings, making this a Quad one win (for now) for BYU. Road wins over top 75 teams are considered Quad one wins.
BYU moves to 10-3 on the season and stays in the bay area for a game at San Francisco Friday night on ESPN2.
