BYU Basketball will open West Coast Conference play on Thursday against the no. 1 Gonzaga Bulldogs.
This, after three failed attempts to start conference play already — BYU’s games at Pepperdine, then San Diego last week were both postponed due to COVID protocols within those two programs. Then it happened again as BYU was set to face Pacific on Thursday at the Marriott Center.
News broke on Mon. that it would be another postponed game for the Cougars, but Head Coach Mark Pope and co. were not having that, as Coach Pope tweeted, “It’s go time! Get ready Cougar Nation! We got a GAME!!” later that same night. It became official Tues. afternoon that BYU would travel to Gonzaga Thursday, since Gonzaga’s game was also postponed — They were meant to play Santa Clara.
Gonzaga was able to open conference play on Jan. 2, beating San Francisco at The Kennel, 85-62. The Bulldogs are 10-0 overall, 1-0 in conference. Four of those 10 wins came against top 20 teams (Virginia, Iowa, West Virginia, Kansas).
BYU is 9-2 overall, but hasn’t played a game since before Christmas on Dec. 23, when they beat Weber State at Vivint Arena, 87-79.
