Tyler Allgeier had over 200 rushing yards and 13th-ranked BYU’s defense held in the second half as the Cougars came out on top 34-20 at Utah State Friday evening.
BYU’s offense was humming in the first half and jumped out to a 24-13 halftime lead, but QB Baylor Romney went out with a concussion, slowing down BYU’s offense in the second half half. Jacob Conover filled in and didn’t have any turnovers, but it was Allgeier that put BYU on his back and won the game. Allgeier rushed for 218 yards on just 22 carries and had 3 TDs. His 67-yard 4th quarter run to set up a 1-yard TD run was the decisive score.
Romney was 15/19 in the first for 187 yards and 1 touchdown. Kalani will likely be mum this week on the QB situation, meaning Boise State will have to prepare for 3 QBs last week.
BYU’s defense gave up some yards at times, but they allowed 20 points to a very competent Utah State offense, including just 7 points in the second half when their backs were against the wall. On the night they gave up 336 yards and had two turnovers.
BYU is now 5-0 on the season and will play in front of a sold out crowd next Saturday versus Boise State in Provo.
