Jeremy DowDell Player Preview
DowDell committed to BYU in 2019 and returned home from his mission in Argentina and Houston in May. DowDell is a walk on, but he doesn’t have a walk-on resume.
As a high school senior in 2018-2019, DowDell averaged 29.6 points per game and broke the Utah state record for threes made in a season with 117; the record was previously held by Nick Emery. He also holds the state record for most threes made in a career with 307.
DowDell had scholarship offers from Washington State and Air Force, but he was a big enough fan of BYU and Mark Pope that he took a preferred walk on offer with the hope of eventually earning a scholarship. Even if he doesn’t get scholarship, he may be just fine with that.
“For me, a scholarship has never been super important,” he said on ESPN 960 before his mission. “I would love to see Coach Pope take that scholarship and give it to a player who really needs it and would make our team a ton better ... I just want to win.”
Jeremy will have a tough time finding the floor this season with all the guys ahead of him, but he can flat out shoot and has the ability to eventually find a role in this program.
Player Comp: Mike Rose
Remember the sharp-shooting redhead that played for BYU from 2003-2007? I think DowDell could develop into that. Rose had similar size to DowDell at 6-foot-3 and carved out a nice career as a 3-point specialist.
2021-2022 Expectations: End of Bench
DowDell can flat out shoot, but BYU is super deep and has a lot of guys vying for playing time. DowDell could find his way into the lineup if Trevin Knell or other guards get hurt, but he’s a guy to watch for down the road in future seasons.
You can watch highlights of DowDell below.
