BYU announced Thursday evening that they have added veteran defensive coach Kevin Clune to its staff as linebackers coach. Clune has 28 years of coaching experience and 10 years as a defensive coordinator. Clune’s hire means that BYU will have 5 defensive and 5 offensive assistants — BYU has had only 6 offensive and 4 defensive assistants the past few seasons.
BYU shuffled defensive coaching assignments to include include DC Ilaisa Tuiaki coaching interior linemen, Ed Lamb safeties, Preston Hadley defensive ends/hybrids and Jernaro Gilford cornerbacks.
Clune spent this past season at BYU as a defensive analyst. Prior to that he was linebackers coach at Memphis and has also been DC at Oregon State, Utah State, and Hawaii. Clune has experience coaching with Kalani Sitake and will bring a veteran and proven coaching presence to BYU’s staff. With the hire of Clune, offensive line coach is the last coaching position BYU has to fill.
