BYU in Final Four for Illinois State Transfer Dusan Mahorcic

The big man transfer is nearing a decision.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL: MAR 04 Missouri Valley Conference Tournament - UNI v Illinois State

BYU is a finalist for another transfer as Illinois State transfer Dusan Mahorcic tells me BYU is in his final four along with Penn State, Texas and Virginia Tech. Mahorcic told me he will announce his decision Friday at 12:00 Central Time.

*5/14 Update: Dusan told me he pushed his decision day to next week.

BYU has been in contact with Mahorcic for weeks and offered him a scholarship last Wednesday after Matt Haarms informed coaches he would not be returning to BYU. Mahorcic averaged 10 points and 7.7 rebounds on 59% shooting last year for Illinois State after transferring from the JUCO ranks. He will have two years of eligibility remaining at his new school.

The 6-foot-10 big man is a traditional big man who does most of his damage around the basket and is effective in the pick and roll and on the glass. Mahorcic told me he has range out to the three-point line but that his outside shooting skills weren’t utilized at Illinios State.

According to KenPom he was 51st nationally in offensive rebounding percentage and 173rd in defensive rebounding percentage nationally. Mahorcic would team with Gavin Baxter, Richard Harward, and newcomers Atiki Ally Atiki and Fousseyni Traore to form the frontcourt nucleus. Caleb Lohner showed this year to that he can play the 4.

BYU has been in touch with Mahorcic everyday for weeks and has been recruiting him as hard as anyone. Penn State is the other school that I feel like has a strong chance and are heavily in the mix. I wouldn’t be surprised if any one of the four finalists win out, but my thoughts at this point are that BYU and Penn State are the two favorites here.
