Sources close to BYU’s basketball program have told me that BYU will play the Oregon Ducks as part of the non-conference slate this November in Portland as part of the Phil Knight Invitational. The game is expected to be at the Moda Center, home of the Portland Trailblazers, which is about 90 minutes north of Oregon’s campus in Eugene.
This game was supposed to happen last year on November 17 as part of a double header with USC-Gonzaga in the Phil Knight Invitational Event, but it was cancelled due to COVID. I have not yet heard an official date in November, but my best guess is that it will be Tuesday, November 16. That lines up with openings in BYU’s and Oregon’s schedules and the pattern of this event happening on a Tuesday. The Phil Knight Invitational is an ESPN event, meaning the game will be broadcast on ESPN or ESPN2.
Oregon is expected to be one of the top teams out West and a preseason top 15 team, including a #11 ranking in ESPN’s “way-too-early rankings”.
Oregon will likely be the best team on BYU’s non-conference slate in what is shaping up to be a good schedule. Below is what we know so far. BYU will add a couple buy games at home and could add a game in Salt Lake at Vivint Smart Home Arena. The college basketball season tips off November 9. I expect BYU to finalize and release its non-conference schedule by the end of August.
