BYU held another scrimmage Saturday with around 100 plays. Kalani said that the defense had a better start to the scrimmage while the offense ended better. After the scrimmage, OC Aaron Roderick told the media that he is close to naming a starting QB.
“The quarterback position is starting to become more clear,” Roderick said. “I’m getting close to just divvy up the reps a little more to give the starter — whoever’s gonna start the first game — a little more. We’re getting to that really soon. Might be as early as Monday, it would be Wednesday at the latest.”
Based on everything I’ve heard I would be shocked if it’s anyone besides Jaren Hall. He was the favorite going into camp and he has done nothing to dispute that he is the best quarterback to start the season versus Arizona. Assuming Hall is the starter, it will be interesting to see if Conover or Baylor Romney are the backup to replace Hall if he goes down during the game with an injury.
When asked what players caught his eye, Roderick mentioned receivers Hobbs Nyberg, Neil Pau’u, Gunner Romney and Puka Nacua.
Roderick on Nyberg: “Hobbs Nyberg had a really good day... I wouldn’t be surprised at all if we see him playing some receiver in games.”
Roderick on Puka Nacua: “Puka, man he plays at a really high level. He plays so hard and so fast.”
