BYU is 4-0 and ranked number 13 as they head into Logan Friday night for an in-state showdown with 3-1 Utah State.
BYU is banged up, but fortunately will get some key guys back for the game.
DC Ilaisa Tuiaki said the starting defensive linemen Tyler Batty and Atunaisa Mahe will both be back for Utah State after missing the USF game due to injury. Starting CB Isaiah Herron also missed the USU game and Tuiaki said the hope is to get him back.
Regarding the QB situation, OC Aaron Roderick said the starting QB for Friday is still up in the air. “We’ll find out today at practice how they’re feeling and how they look. If Jaren (Hall) is ready to go then it’ll be Jaren. If he’s not, then it will be Baylor (Romney) again.” Kalani went on to say Jaren Hall will practice today and that he thinks he will be available this week, but that they’ll need to see how things go in practice.
Kalani in his Monday press conference said that “nobody is out for the season” and that they’ll “add some guys that could’ve played.” Kalani went on to say “the one guy that is highly doubtful is Caleb Christensen.” Caleb is BYU’s main kick returner and is a cornerback.
Regarding Keenan Ellis, Kalani said that he is “day to day” and they’re not sure if he will be available versus Utah State. They will find out later this week if he is able to practice. The fact that the staff is considering playing Keenan Ellis is great news after his scary injury versus Arizona. He was expected to be BYU’s top cornerback this season.
Starting right tackle Harris LaChance left the USF game on crutches, but Kalani said that LaChance “should be back with us this week.”
BYU’s depth chart had a few minor changes. Connor Pay and Joe Tukuafu have had an “or” designation between them the whole season at right guard with Connor Pay on top. The or designation remains, but Joe Tukuafu is the first guy there after getting the start versus USF.
BYU also added the “FRODO” position after it was off the depth chart for a few weeks. Ammon Hannemann is there along with George Udo.
Kicker Jake Oldroyd has played in only the Utah game so far and for the first time this season is listed with an “or” between him and Justin Smith.
Lopini Katoa is the top kick returner after Caleb Christensen went out versus USF with an injury.
