Sources: Dawson Baker Set to Make his Season Debut for BYU

BYU is set to get some more scoring pop.

BYU is set to get a boost as UC Irvine transfer Dawson Baker is expected to make his season debut versus Georgia State tonight, multiple sources tell me. Dawson’s minutes are expected to be limited as he ramps up recovery from a foot injury.

Dawson is a 6-foot-4 combo/two guard that will give BYU additional scoring punch and veteran experience. A three-year starter for UC Irvine, Dawson averaged double figures all three seasons. He was Big West freshman of the year in 2020-2021 and was named All-Big West Second-Team this past season. Dawson was the team’s leading scorer for the Big West regular season champs, averaging 15.3 points on 47% shooting from the floor, 37% from three, and 80% from the foul line. He was top 200 nationally in fouls drawn per 40 minutes, according to KenPom. His scoring increased each season from 10.7 as a freshman, 11.2 as a sophomore, and 15.3 in his third year. This past season he also averaged 3.2 rebounds, 1.2 assists, and 1.6 turnovers.

I expect Dawson’s minutes to gradual increase as he integrates himself into playing shape and builds chemistry with his teammates. He has three non-conference games and three full weeks before BYU’s Big 12 opener January 6. Dawson is absolutely talented to start at some point, but I think he will come off the bench this season and be another weapon that BYU can rely on. Dawson is a great shooter, but his ability to score off the dribble and create space will add another wrinkle to this BYU offense. Once fully healthy, I think he could be BYU’s best scorer off the dribble. BYU’s bench unit is stalwart with leading scorer Jaxson Robinson and Richie Saunders, and adding Dawson Baker to that mix could legitimately give BYU one of the best benches in the Big 12.

Dawson Baker still has one year of eligibility remaining after this season. You can watch highlights of him below.
