BYU’s defense got a boost for the 2024 season as linebacker Ben Bywater announced he will return to BYU for a sixth season.

A 3-year starter, Bywater has amassed 247 tackles in 36 career games. Bywater had 102 tackles in 2021 and 98 tackles in 2022 before his season was cut short after just four games this year due to a shoulder injury. Bywater had 32 tackles and 3 TFLs in 2023. Bywater has a sixth year of eligibility remaining due to a redshirt in 2019 and the 2020 season not counting against players’ eligibility.

Bywater will look to head a linebacker unit that includes Harrison Taggart, Weber State transfer Jack Kelly, and some young players that showed promise this year. Players such as Ace Kaufusi, Siale Esera, Isaiah Glasker and others showed flashes this season and will look to be bigger parts of the defense in 2024.

Bywater joins other veterans such as Tyler Batty, Brayden Keim, Connor Pay, and Keanu Hill that have announced they will return in 2024.
