Zach discusses the good and bad of hometown announcers who cross the line into homerism

To pass the time during the long offseason and to utilize another medium of discussion, I have begun to film and edit a short YouTube video series entitled Blox's Banter. This will hopefully be a weekly series, with more and more BYU related topics to be introduced as the summer continues.

In Episode 1, I take a look at the good and bad of overly homerific hometown announcers.

Please contact me, dmitch44. I need to meet you.

I do not frequent CougarBoard. I do not have a problem with the site. I have heard horror stories, yet some of my favorite Cougar fans post on that site. Like any message board, I am sure it has its good and bad.

An acquaintance sent me the following screenshot. Enter dmitch44

I am fluent in both Troll and Zoob, and I cannot for the life of me authenticate which one of these dialects best describes this post. It is so over-the-top that my first thought was this has to be some kind of joke. But there are bits and pieces of evidence that point to this being a piece of pure Zion Curtain persona never to be duplicated. Let's break this down.

To begin, what apostle even has kids of dating age? Bednar? Cook? Christoffersen? I refuse go to TMZ but I am willing to cross Packer off the list.

"Play the spiritual card?": I would assume this refers to the recently renewed temple recommend of a newly-returned Elder. But the sheer immaturity of the phrase makes me think my man dmitch has just ordained a Priest. I see where his strategy lies: This is an Apostle's daughter -- she will not accept me as anything but a teenage version of Jeffrey R. Holland. The fact that he needs to "play" the spiritual card reveals that if dmitch were to ever actually meet and shake hands with said Apostle Dad, his soul would disclose this truth and dmitch's dreams of marrying into a Celestial certainty would be shattered. This may very well be a Zoob.

"Go to the temple grounds and talk about eternal marriage and goals." You cannot have a better perspective than this. The timing, however, leaves room to be desired. This cannot be real. The stories of BYU dude informing BYU coed that the Spirit had confirmed their future marriage are simply a myth, right? Right? Then, I remember the few times I walked through the campus of Brigham Young University for non-football purposes and it dons on me that this might actually be a serious post from a kid named Alma J. Christensen from Spanish Fork, Utah. This might be a Zoob.

"Play the I'm fun and different card": If dmitch is real, he believes the dating tactics outlined above are normal. This has to be a Troll.

"Make finger foods, write her a song, paint her a picture, and tango or two step through downtown."

This has to be a Troll.

"I thought of playing the cougar card and getting take out and watching all the highlights of the Cougars rippin the Utes." See, this is where he reels me back in! The innate innocence, ridiculousness, and social awkwardness of this phrase must make him a real person. It would take a truly talented novelist to come up with such a perfect phrase. It encapsulates the very essence of the Provo bubble. When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth. This is a Zoob.

"Thoughts? Or any other ideas?" If I ever had a date with an Apostle's daughter, I'd show up to the door with these moves.

One of the great trolls of all-time or a Zoob for the ages? You decide.

The Cougars are coming to Phoenix.

Brigham Young University and the University of Arizona have agreed to a three game football series beginning in 2016. The announcement was delivered in a unique way: via Google Hangout. The games will take place in 2016, 2018, and 2020.

2016 -- BYU v. Arizona at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona

2018 -- BYU at Arizona

2020 -- Arizona at BYU

The Cougars will play two neutral site contests in 2016 as the Y is already scheduled to play West Virginia at Fed Ex Field in Landover, Maryland. BYU and Arizona completed a home-and-home arrangement in 2005 and 2006, with both teams winning on their respective home field.

Five games are now slated for the 2016 season, all away from LaVell Edwards Stadium. In addition to the neutral site games against Arizona and West Virginia, roadies against Utah, Boise State, and Cincinnati are scheduled.

Kudos to Tom Holmoe and company for scheduling a BCS opponent and getting a home and neutral site game in return. This is simply all BYU can leverage at this point. A great day to be a Cougar!

CBS Sports columnist lights the fire of optimism in Provo.

Chris Huston, Twitter royalty in the college football community for his great work at Heisman Pundit, filed a brief piece for CBS Sports on Taysom Hill being named the starting quarterback at BYU. Though short in length, the ripples of this story have already reached the outer reaches of the spirit world.

The pertinent quote:

If Hill can come back 100 percent from his injury, he has the ability to do for BYU what Johnny Manziel did for Texas A&M.

Break out the Quest for Perfection t-shirts!

I have long been on record as believing that Hill is the prototypical quarterback for college football played in the second decade of the 21st century. His athletic ability is unquestioned, and based on the small sample of last season, his decision-making fits the mold as well. Some question Hill's development and ability to be an accurate passer.

I think that is unfair.

Hill did not receive a majority of the snaps during Spring or Fall camp last season. And, after Riley Nelson's injury and ineffectiveness showed their ugly face against Utah and Boise State, Hill had just two weeks of preparation as the number-one starter. BYU won both of those games, the latter of which Hill was sidelined with a season-ending injury. (First reported here on VTF. Digital high-five to myself!)

Remember, folks, Hill was recruited and signed by Jim Harbaugh to play football at Stanford. Given Harbaugh's evaluative prowess, I don't think we should worry about Hill's upside. And with Anae the White now returned to the Provo Shire, BYU has the master it needs to develop this talented Idaho native. Anae's ability to mold John Beck, Max Hall, and Matt Scott speaks for itself.

I told myself that I would never be overly optimistic every again. Yet, here I am. I am who I am.

The newly-minted receivers coach brings great passion to Provo.

A few weeks ago, BYUtv Sports reporter Robbie Bullough spoke with new BYU receivers coach Guy Holliday about his transition to BYU. The discussion was my first introduction to Coach Holliday.

I had three impressions: Holliday brings a terrific energy and perspective to BYU; he looks like Ron Boone; and he terrifies me. Between Dr. Anae and Holliday, the BYU Offensive staff had quite the intimidation makeover during the offseason.

The interview was a treat to listen to. I've clipped some of the highlights.

On how others see his coaching style:

"I am very demanding person...very intense." "Most people think of me as a very intimidating person."

On his goal as a coach:

"When this is all over, when the ball stops, whether they are successful as people."

"On the field, when we cross the white lines, I am not going to let you cheat the game."

On whether BYU is his final stop:

"I'm hoping this is it. I really admire everything Brigham Young University stands for."

On being the only non-Mormon coach on staff:

"A lot is being [said about] not being LDS... I'm Christian. The principles are the same...As long as God is at the head, I don't have a problem."

On what he wants his WR corp profile to be to opposing teams:

"We are the toughest, most physical wide outs they've ever played against.""We are going to finish in the run game."

"At the end of the day, we are going to let the team know they are going to bring a lunch pail to play BYU receivers."

I encourage you to watch the entire clip. It is well worth seven minutes of your time. The phrase "I am not going to let you cheat the game" is one of the best I've heard in recent memory. With Cody Hoffman returning for his Senior season, with dreams of the NFL within grasp, Holliday will be a key cog in continuing Hoffman's development. Additionally, perhaps the former-UTEP man can solve the Ross Apo riddle. One thing is certain: if interviews are any indication, Holliday has entered the Utah Valley with something to prove.

VTF goes Twitchy Team, sans the comment section. I mean it. Don't.

Yesterday, the Brigham Young University Cougars defeated the Washington Huskies 90-79 in the opening round of the National Invitational Tournament.

Whatever.

During the contest, a bevy of folks on Twitter noticed the number of Caucasian folks in attendance, both basketball players on the floor and spectators in the crowd. The result was hilarious, sad, and could probably be the source of a terrific sociological case study if only Brigham Young University were a research institution.

Bulldogs probable #1 seed, Gaels NCAA hopes on life support.

In a familiar place against a familiar foe, the Gonzaga Bulldogs put another feather in their cap, defeating the Saint Mary's Gaels 65-51 in the West Coast Conference Tournament Final on Monday night in Las Vegas.

It was the 16th-straight WCC Finals appearance for the Zags. This is a mind-boggling achievement in the context of the program as a whole, and only furthered by the fact that the Bulldogs are currently ranked as the top-team in the country and are in a great spot to garner a number-one seed in the NCAA Tournament six days from now.

After an off shooting night in the semifinal against Loyola Marymount, the Bulldogs were firing on all cylinders tonight. Kelly Olynyk led all scorers with 21 points. The West Coast Conference Player of the Year was 7 of 12 from the field, pulled down 12 rebounds, and continued his reign of terror on opposing defenses.

Elias Harris was terrific again, scoring 19 points on 8 of 13 shooting. If the last two games are any indication of Harris' desire, come Tournament time, the citizens of Zagville have to be very excited.

The Sin City contest was similar to the Spokane contest the two teams had earlier in the season. Gonzaga jumped out to a nice halftime lead, followed by a quick run in the second. The Gaels trimmed a 20-point lead at McCarthey Center and had a chance to tie the contest late. Gonzaga simply would not allow that to happen at the Orleans Arena, cutting off a mini Saint Mary's run off at the pass midway through the second half with a run of its own.

For all of his career greatness -- both in years past, and as recently as his game-saving three-pointer to send the Gaels to an overtime against San Diego just one game ago -- Matthew Dellavedova had a night to forget. The perennial All-WCC performer had an off shooting night and was never able to get an offensive rhythm going.

It was also a night to forget as Jordan Page left the contest in the first half with a knee injury. It is this writer's hope that Delly and his Saint Mary's teammates have a chance to play in this year's NCAA Tournament. Steven Holt led all Gaels with 19 points.

The consistent opining from the media waxing eloquent about Gonzaga's apparent lack of credibility will not be silenced despite the terrific performance. Thankfully, the NCAA Tournament is just a week and a half away. It seemed the great energy employed by the Zags was evidence that this squad has only the highest of expectations.

Thankfully in college basketball, the arguments about the have and the have-nots are settled on the court. The Zags are ready to quiet the critics at home and abroad.

Football, Injury, Conversion, Missionary Work, and Life.

For some reason, I have always remembered Brian McDonald.

The Cerritos JC talent played two years with the Cougars (2000 and 2001) and quietly sailed into the real world and out of the public spotlight. My memories of McDonald, then McDonald-Ashford, revolve around his role in the great comeback against Virginia in 2000 and his efforts against Tulane and Cal during the magical 2001 season.

McDonald was the primary backup to Luke Staley on that 2001 squad, and were it not for Brian's career-ending knee injury against Utah State, perhaps he would have made a more indelible imprint on the BYU fanbase as a whole. Translation: Brian could have helped the offense a little more than Ned Stearns once Staley went down with injury. (No offense intended, I love you Ned.)

So, why am I writing about Brian McDonald? This is a man who accounted for just 741 yards of rushing during his two seasons in Provo. I stumbled upon this video of McDonald opining on the Honor Code. He explains how it shaped his time at BYU and was the means for real character change as he grew into adulthood.

McDonald relates of his conversion to the LDS Church and his subsequent service as a full-time missionary. The conversion of all-time BYU great Curtis Brown is well known -- as is the story of Jamal Willis. While this clip only briefly mentions McDonald's path, it sure opened my eyes to a story I am ashamed I did not know about until today. I know I would like to know more about his experience. The true purpose of BYU Athletics on display.

The short clip is worth your time.

The crack investigative journalist at VTF has the goods.

All eyes were on the BYU Offense as Robert the Anae began his second reign as guru of the Cougar attack. Anae announced that the team will be using giant signal cards ala Oregon to usher in the play calls during the 2013 campaign. I got my hands on those signal cards and posted this expose on the Interwebs. I do not know what they mean, but I am pretty sure none of the pictures call for a QB sneak when up 3 points on 1st down, with your opponent with just one timeout left and 1:12 remaining..

BYU head coach inclined to stay in Provo

"Bronco Mendenhall's time in Provo is limited." This idea perpetuated over the past two years-plus, finding birth both from Mendenhall's own reluctance to sign an extensive deal, his comments about long-term coaching careers, and the strange 2012 season as a whole. This rumor increased to a near-crescendo after Mendenhall rehired Robert Anae, giving him the title of Assistant Head Coach, and promoted Nick Howell to defensive coordinator. Are these not the moves of a coach laying the foundation for his departure?

I guess not.

Mendenhall informed Jeff Call of the Deseret News that he intends to stay at Brigham Young University beyond the final year of his contract, which expires at the end of the 2013 season. Brad Rock's piece on Bronco is worth reading as he chronicles what to expect as BroncoBall moves into its second decade. As is Call's piece with quotes from Bronco himself, including one where he mentions he feels the next stage in program development is something he is ‘supposed to do.'

What changed?

Did Marc Clay Bronco Mendenhall just Rick Roll the BYU fanbase?

National writers have caught wind of the story as well. This NBC Sports piece on the weekend's news is, um, interesting?

The 'sizable segment' of BYU fans who want to fire Bronco are the sports version of Birthers.
— Zach Bloxham (@zbloxham) March 4, 2013

Y'all know I am the biggest Bronco Mendenhall proponent on the face of the Earth. Yes, even more than Holly. No one embodies all that BYU strives to be more than Mendenhall. BYU has never had the talent level it does now. The 2013 schedule is the best in school history. Bronco Mendenhall still has something to prove. Has his administration been perfect? No. He, like all of us, is still learning how to perfect his employ and get the most out of those around him. There is simply no one who can lead the program into the next level better than Bronco Mendenhall.

Here's to much, much more of this:
