When BYU announced it had signed a four-year contract to play UVU, most BYU fans probably assumed that these would be easy wins, especially with three of them in the Marriott Center. Today, UVU proved that they should not be taken lightly in the eyes of BYU fans as the Wolverines put up a ton of points beating BYU 114-101 to secure the first UVU win over BYU ever.
Former Cougar Isaac Neilson led the Wolverines with 26 points and 9 rebounds. Three other UVU players also scored over 20 points, those being Brandon Randolph (21), Connor Toolson (21), and Jordan Poydras came off the bench to score 20. UVU made 18 three-point shots and shot almost 53 percent from the field.
BYU scored more than its share of points, but the lack of defense played ultimately did the Cougars in. BYU struggled to guard pick and roll actions and gave up many dribble penetrations to kick out three-point attempts.
Nick Emery was fantastic with 37 points and Eric Mika also had 22 points, while Kyle Davis chipped in 11. No other Cougar player was in double digits. BYU shot 47 percent from the field but was almost atrocious from three, going 6 for 21 for 28 percent. BYU was also out-rebounded by UVU 43-38.
This is now two straight games where BYU has scored enough to win, but allowed an absurd amount of points causing them to lose a game that should have been won. They have a week to make some adjustments before they take on another high scoring team in USC.
