WCC Men’s Basketball media day is today, and coaches once again view BYU as the third best team in the conference. Gonzaga is unsurprisingly the runaway favorite to win the conference, and St. Mary’s received one more vote than BYU to take the second spot in the preseason poll. St. Mary’s lost three all-conference players from last season, but coaches gave them the slight nod over BYU.
Gonzaga Coach Mark Few, however, views BYU as the biggest threat to the Zags as he gave BYU his first place vote (coaches are not allowed to vote for their own team). Here are the standings as voted on by the 10 coaches.
1. Gonzaga (9) - 81
2. St. Mary’s - 68
3. BYU (1) - 67
4. San Francisco - 57
5. San Diego - 52
6. Pacific - 39
7. LMU - 31
8. Pepperdine - 22
9. Santa Clara - 18
10. Portland - 15
Yoeli Childs was the lone BYU player to make the preseason all-conference team. Gonzaga was the only team to have multiple players make the all-conference team, as they had four(!) starters on the list.
