It appears that the BYU Cougars football team and the basketball team both got their annual cupcake opponents during the same week. They started strong and never let up running the Southern Virginia Knights out of the gym with a final score of 101-48. This was a great opportunity to give some minutes to the younger players on the roster. There were several times tonight when all five players on the floor were first year players.
The physical difference between these two teams was stark. If someone did not know any better they might think BYU was having a scrimmage against green jerseyed Provo High School. SVU seemed to be in foul trouble from the opening tip to the final buzzer and it was mostly attributable to the superior size and athleticism of BYU. As a team, the Cougars recorded 19 steals, a BYU program record.
Freshman Jake Toolson was the star of the night going 5/8 from three-point range and also adding 7 rebounds, 4 assists, and 4 steals. He assisted on the play of the night with a cross-court alleyoop pass to Josh Sharp in the waning minutes of the game.
Tyler Haws scored 13 points and went 7/7 from the free throw line bringing his double figures scoring streak to 51 straight games.
Kyle Collinsworth did not play.
