In 1997 BYU beat the Kansas State Wildcats in the Cotton Bowl 19-15. Capping off his 1996 WAC Player of the Year season, Shay Muirbrook was also awarded the Defensive MVP of the Cotton Bowl. In his final game as a Cougar, Muirbrook recorded 11 unassisted tackles, one assisted tackle, and five tackles for loss totaling 26 yards. Muirbrook also set a BYU record for sacks in a game at six, including a safety and a total of 38 yards loss.
