Cougar Kickoff Countdown: 50 Days

Halfway through the countdown we take a quick look back at things that transpired in the first 50 days.

Mike McGinnis

On day 100 news broke that BYU was conducting an internal investigation concerning alleged NCAA infractions. Fans freaked out and local sports media exploded in hyperbole.

Fan Fest was held in three different locations in Utah and it was a blast. Multiple BYU sports teams were represented with players and coaches, including the football and men's basketball teams. Tom Holmoe wandered around greeting fans; not every day you get the chance to chat it up with a guy who has won 5 Super Bowl rings.

BYU released their2014 Football Season Trailer:

It was rumored by CBS Sports' Jeremy Fowler that Alabama would possibly schedule BYU in 2015 to fill a void in their schedule. The claim was exciting, but rather tenuous once all things were considered. BYU quashed any such thoughts when they scheduled UCLA instead for a home-and-home in 2015 and 2016.

Phil Steele announced his All-Independent team, in which BYU  was well represented by their 16 players on first and second teams.

Tom Holmoe was named to the NCAA Men's Basketball Committee. Although this is not directly related to football, we all know that connections matter. This can indirectly help improve the national profile of BYU football as Holmoe builds relationships with commissioners of other schools and conferences.

KVN inked a sweet $5.1 million contract with the Detroit Lions, including a $2 million signing bonus just in time for his nuptials.

Although BYU has been dropping scholly bombs all over the place and locking up the bee hive, they have not dropped anything in Salem, UT. The Cougars have remained oddly cold on one of the best defensive players out there in Porter Gustin.

In a bold move Bronco Mendenhall made BYU a nationally relevant team to talk about in the off-season when he told the Austin American-Statesman, "We would love to be in the Big 12."

BYU Football Media Day was pretty bland. The biggest announcements were that BYU will be travelling over 14,500 miles this season and that OC Robert Anae wants his offense to go fast, go hard, and go far.

As it stands right now, BYU has five players on seven different award watch lists. Than number will increase as there are still eight watch lists yet to be announced.

Harvey Langi is done with his mission and wants to become a Cougar.
