Perhaps no other defensive player has ever taken such complete control of a game as did Kyle Van Noy in the 2012 Poinsettia Bowl against the San Diego State Aztecs. Going into the fourth quarter, the lackluster offensive attack left BYU down, 6-3, and with about twelve minutes into the game Van Noy came to the rescue. He forced a fumble by San Diego State quarterback Adam Dingwell and then dropped on the ball, scoring the first touchdown of the game and giving the Cougars the lead over the Aztecs. In the closing minutes, after Spencer Hadley put pressure on Dingwell, Van Noy intercepted Dingwell's pass an ran it into the end zone for another touchdown. Van Noy's twelve points doubled up San Diego State's offensive effort and were more than half of the points for BYU as they won 23-6.
