We learn a lot more about what recruiting experts think of prospects as each summer progresses, with prospects attending various camps across the country and getting more exposure to recruitniks.
Many BYU commits and offers have received ratings for the first time or been upgraded through the summer, as reflected on 247 Sports composite rating.
2016 Recruiting
2016 Recruiting
The most prominent news out of ratings updates is wide receiver commit Jonah Trinnaman of Snow College. Trinnaman, who committed to BYU on June 23, finally received a new composite rating. His previous rating of 75.83 (2 stars) was his mark coming out of American Fork High School. His first composite rating reflecting his talent out of Snow College: 88.50, inching close to 4-star status.
Four BYU commits received upgraded ratings while two fell slightly. Here's the full update of the most recent updates. All are composite scores from 247 Sports unless otherwise indicated for players with no 247 rating.
RATED
Stat-stuffing TE Hank Tuipulotu, who committed to BYU on July 3, highlights the newly-rated players by receiving his first composite rating, coming in at a cool 3 stars.
BYU commit TE Hank Tuipulotu (Fort Mill, SC - Nation Ford HS) rated 80.83 (3 stars)
BYU commit DT Atunaisa Mahe (West Jordan, UT - West Jordan HS) rated 2 stars by Scout
BYU offer LB Jackson Kaufusi (Salt Lake City, UT - Brighton HS) rated 82.22 (3 stars)
BYU offer RB Brandon Rice (Coppell, TX - Coppell HS) rated 81.15 (3 stars)
BYU offer Tobe Okafor (Portland, OR - Central Catholic HS) rated 3 stars by Scout
BYU offer RB Wayne Taulapapa (Honolulu, HI - Punahou HS) rated 2 stars by Rivals
There was little out there, ratings-wise, on big Atunaisa Mahe, but he came in at 2 stars according to Scout. Jackson Kaufusi got a low 3-star rating, while offer Wayne Taulapapa got 2 stars from Rivals. At least on film, Taulapapa looks like a really solid prospect, more around the 85.00 range, so I'm surprised at Rivals' low evaluation.
UPGRADED
Trinnaman was a high-riser, as was kicker commit Skyler Southam, buoyed by an Army All-American Game invite. QB commit Jaren Hall also continues a gradual rise in ratings, bumping up a point or so with every new update.
BYU commit WR Jonah Trinnaman (Snow College) upgraded from 75.83 (2 stars) to 88.50 (3 stars)
BYU commit QB Jaren Hall (Spanish Fork, UT - Maple Mountain HS) upgraded again from 84.07 to 85.50
BYU commit K Skyler Southam (Heber City, UT - Wasatch HS) upgraded from 80.00 to 85.00
BYU commit DT Wayne Kirby (Pocatello, ID - Highland HS) upgraded from 83.33 to 84.22
BYU offer WR Adewale Omotosho (Plano, TX - Plano East) upgraded from 85.67 to 87.49
BYU offer DE/LB Pookie Maka (North Salt Lake, UT - Cottonwood HS) upgraded from 83.67 to 85.18
DOWNGRADED
Two BYU commits received slight drops, but Freddy Livai's drops him just below the 3-star threshold.
BYU commit CB Aleva Hifo (Menifee, CA - Heritage HS) downgraded from 85.00 to 83.15
BYU commit LB Freddy Livai (Fontana, CA - AB Miller HS) downgraded from 80.17 (3 stars) to 79.00 (2 stars)
BYU offer DE Maxs Tupai (Salt Lake City, UT - Murray HS) downgraded from 91.10 to 90.60
BYU offer S Hirkley Latu (Kahuku, HI - Kahuku HS) downgraded from 85.00 to 83.89
BYU offer ATH Tre Miller (St. George, UT - Dixie HS) downgraded from 87.78 to 85.56
