Rivals recently updated its recruiting rankings, and the latest look at the top 10 football players in the state of Utah from the 2016 class is favorable for BYU.
BYU holds commits from players 3-5 (Max Tooley, Jaren Hall and Keenan Pili).
Maxs Tupai, Pookie Maka and Fua Pututau were previously somewhat longer shots for BYU, but with the hire of Kalani Sitake, could BYU get back in play?
After Drew Jensen at #10, BYU is also very much in play with athletes Jackson Kaufusi (Brighton HS, Utah) and Tre Miller (Dixie HS, Utah). It will be interesting to see if the Cougars can dominate recruiting the best Utah players after previously whiffing on several in years past.
That would be a nice feat for the program, but if you add that to commitments from out-of-state/JC consensus four-star Handsome Tanielu and Troy Warner, then you might be talking about a pretty special class.
What's kept BYU from taking the next step has been improved recruiting that leads to increased depth. Maybe, just maybe, we're on our way to seeing it happen.
