Non-revenue sports report: Fall sports conclude, winter sports begin to warm up

BYU's non-revenue sports have enjoyed years of success, a tradition we hope can continue throughout the year (and maybe spill over to the men's basketball and football teams).

The eyes of most BYU fans are fixated on December 27th and the Fight Hunger Bowl, hoping to end the season on a positive note. While going bowling helps to extend the football season a little longer, BYU's other fall sports have finally wrapped up very successful seasons.

The exciting and popular women's soccer team enjoyed another season nationally ranked and a berth into the NCAA tournament. Fans have shown their support at South Field giving BYU the second highest average attendance for Women's Soccer who ended the season ranked 23rd and bowed out in the second round of the tournament. This marks the second year in a row that BYU has won the WCC title, played in the NCAA tournament and ended the year nationally ranked. The team finished with a 15-5-1 record this season.

The other nationally recognized Lady Cougar team this season was the women's volleyball team who had achieved a ranking as high as 19th, but ended the season outside the top 25 losing two of their last four games of the regular season. The Cougars still got an invite to the NCAA tournament but failed to make it past USC in the second round just last week. Another nod to the great BYU fans in Provo, the women's volleyball team was undefeated in the Smith Field House this year posting a 11-0 record (24-7 overall).

The final high achieving BYU team from these past few months was the men's cross country team who took 4th place at the NCAA championships in November. This is their second fourth place finish in three years and are looking to stay in the national scene for years to come.

Also of note is the men's golf team who started the season with top five finishes in all four of their tournaments this fall. We'll keep you updated on their progress as they escape the cold of Utah and head south for tournaments in January and February.

Heading into the cold of winter and the new year we not only get to stay indoors and watch the basketball teams head into conference play, but we also get the start of the men's volleyball season! BYU men's volleyball has achieved great success in recent years including a second place finish in the NCAA tournament last spring. The Cougars are ranked 3rd in the preseason and return many of their starters from last year. They will be looking to dominate the MPSF (the men's volleyball conference) and show the UCI Anteaters (last year's champions) who's boss. If you miss a game this year (most are on BYUtv) come to Vanquish the Foe for all your volleyball team info. The first games are on December 27th and 28th against Winnipeg.

If you missed Kevin's great write-up on the women's basketball team, be sure you check that out too. The cougars are on a 9-1 start and looking to make some noise in the West Coast Conference. BYU athletic is having a heyday this year with many of the teams earning national attention, hopefully our fans can get out and continue to support them in whatever arena the may play in.
