After one of the craziest opening week games in BYU history, we're here to bring you the first week of POWER RANKINGS, a not-so-scientific ordering of the best from week to week.

Let me preface these rankings by saying that it has been 24 hours since the Miracle at Memorial and I'm barely able to write complete sentences. It took me a good 30 minutes to be able to stand up and a couple of hours before I could speak words.

Never has a victory been equal parts bitter and sweet. Now let's get on with the rankings.

WEEK 1 POWER RANKINGS

Honorable Mentions

Devon Blackmon - If he prays for something to happen, the it will probably happen.

Terren Houk - Besides hugging the ref, he brought his A game with some fine catches

BYU O-Line - We don't get the storybook ending without amazing pass protection

10) Robert Anae

Never in the history of his BYU coaching career has Doctor Robert Anae trolled the fan base so hard. With less than one minute to go on their own 35 yard line, he decides to call a draw play with Adam Hine. This was the craziest of calls considering 1) BYU pretty much had ZERO success running the ball and 2) WE HAD NO FREAKING TIME OUTS LEFT AND WE HAD 65 YARDS TO GO. Clearly he saw something in the Nebraska defense because Adam scampered up the middle for 16 yards, at which point the entire BYU fan base said, "WHAT THE HEL.......AVENS!!!!!! OH GOSH I'M GLAD THAT WORKED." It could have turned out poorly but hey, it didn't. THE MASTER OF THE SAMOAN FIRE KNIFE WINS THIS ROUND.

9) Jonny Linehan

"That's weird. Does Jonny Linehan REALLY need an entire room to himself? He's just a punter," said everyone while watching Inside BYU Football.

OF COURSE HE DESERVES HIS OWN ROOM. If you casually show up to your first ever football game and boom some serious punts (a few of which were into the wind) then you're allowed to have your own position room, piggy back rides up the RB stairs and free Chick-Fli-A for the whole semester. Let's make this happen ASAP.

8) Micah Hannemann

The BYU secondary wasn't exactly a "no fly zone" on Saturday but when the BYU defense desperately needed a stop, Micah came up with a HUGE interception what was as pretty as it was needed. That's some NFL-style goodness because the dude got two feet in.

7) Fred Warner

You are lying to me if you didn't think the exact some thing whenever Fred Warner made a huge play on Saturday.

"DANG was that Fred Warner? Because that sure looked like Kyle Van Noy."

He's got a long way to go before he's in the same conversation as KVN, but dang it if he doesn't remind us of him. It's good to know we have a serious athlete on the edge.

6) Trevor Samson

BYU won by 5 points, huh? How many points did Trevor "I'LL KICK INTO THE WIND LIKE A BOSS" Samson produce from field goals alone? SIX. If you're not giving all kinds of love to Samson then you need check yourself. Also, did anyone notice how much facial hair Trevor was sporting? Either he has a beard card or he just walks around campus like "I DO WHAT I WANT" and everyone just respects that.

5) Bronson Kaufusi

Did you see how much Bronson was smiling on Saturday? I sure as heck did. He looked right at home on the defensive line, just straight up terrorizing the Nebraska offense.

4) Nick Kurtz

I honestly could have put any of these next four guys in the top spot but because I have to honor the rules of power rankings, I have to draw the line somewhere. I loved so many things about Nick's performance but there is one thing that stood out to me in particular. The guy is an absolute ball hawk. There were multiple times that he caught the ball at the highest point, including one almost miracle catch on the final drive where he had the ball in his hands for a brief moment before it was swatted away.

Kurtz displayed laser focus while seeing the ball into his hands on several occasions. It's an understatement to say that I am REALLY excited to see what this kid can do the rest of the season.

3) Tanner Mangum

Imagine that you are playing football for the first time since 2012. Imagine that you got home from your mission 96 days ago. Imagine that your first college football game ever you have to fill in for THE MAN Taysom Hill. Imagine that you are down by four points and the running game is doing diddly squat. Imagine that on fourth and one with nine minutes left Nebraska rushes six and you're scrambling to stay alive let alone complete a pass. Imagine that you roll left only to see defenders in your face and then you roll right to see even more red shirts. Imagine that you deliver a perfect pass while getting drilled in the face and that leads to a field goal. THEN ON THE FINAL DRIVE YOU THROW A TOUCHDOWN PASS AS TIME EXPIRES.

Basically imagine that you are Tanner Mangum, the baddest dude on planet earth. Swag for days.

2) Mitch Mathews

I'm not going to lie and say that I have always loved Mitch Matthews with all my heart. I have repeatedly mocked Mitch for his propensity to only catch balls out of bounds and complain to the officials after every play. Seconds before the Miracle I sent out this flippant tweet.

AND THEN HE MADE ONE OF FINEST CATCHES IN SCHOOL HISTORY. I have never been so happy to be wrong on Twitter in my entire life. Mitch, I know you're reading this, please know that the scripture of Matthew 6:14 has taken root in my heart. I forgive you my friend and hope that you can find it in your heart to forgive me.

1) Taysom Hill

"O Captain! my Captain! rise up and hear the bells;
Rise up—for you the flag is flung—for you the bugle trills"

STAT OF THE GAME

In BYU's final drive, the only passing yards came from the final touchdown pass. The first 34 yards on that drive came by way of an 11-yard run by Mangum, and 16-yard run by Hine and another 7-yard run from Mangum. That's not how you usually drive down the field to set up game winning play with no timeouts.

WELL THAT WAS WEIRD

Most other football teams don't want anything to do with the refs after scoring but apparently here at BYU we feel the need to show them the love. First it was the Riley high five in Texas, and now it's the Houk Hug.

Nate Slack's first BYU football game in two years was one for the ages. The recently returned missionary decompresses with his observations here.

It was nice to finally have a weekend filled with college football action, and feels like it has been a really long time since I have been able to enjoy one. I came away with a few big takeaways from a game that we won’t be forgetting anytime soon.

Tanner Mangum

Tanner Mangum is the real deal. I saw Mangum on a daily basis for about four weeks as we were in the Mexico City MTC together. I remember looking at him with all the other missionaries and thinking he was a monster. There were a few comments I read over the weekend about how he is undersized, but I believe that is only the case when he is compared to Taysom Hill. Mangum is listed at 6’3 210 lbs. and showed great patience and poise in the pocket during the game.

He went 7-of-11 passing for 111 yards. The almost-sack he was able to avoid as he passed it downfield to Nick Kurtz on the 4th & 3 late in the game showed great athleticism and awareness. He again showed it as he turned a broken play into a much needed first down run on the Cougars' final drive. Yes, we are now without Taysom Hill, but Tanner Mangum stepped up when he was called on.

Offensive Line

The offensive line created a beautiful pocket for a large part of the game. Three months ago, the senior writer for the Big 10 conference, Tom Dienhart, predicted that Nebraska would have the strongest defensive line in the Big 10 West this season, beating out Minnesota, Northwestern, Wisconsin, Purdue, and Illinois to earn the that title. Many people had their worries about how Hill would be protected and how the line would perform against the big D linemen of Nebraska, but they responded well and allowed the quarterbacks to pass for almost 400 yards. Hill and Mangum had plenty of time to look thtrough their options and find the open guy, which became crucial as BYU did not have a lot of success running the football.

Anemic run game

BYU only carried the ball for 132 yards which doesn’t sound like that bad of a game until you take away the 98 yards from the quarterbacks on 13 tries, leaving only 23 yards from the rest of the team. Hine carried the ball 4 times for 37 yards with a long of 20 yards while Mitch Juergens, Algie Brown, and Nate Carter combined for a grand total of 8 carries for negative 3 yards. In order for Tanner Mangum to really have success, BYU will need to find answers to the running problems they faced all game Saturday. Fall camp standout Francis Bernard suffered a broken finger he had surgically repaired early last week but is expected to play vs UCLA in a couple of weeks. But even with Bernard, will BYU be able to develop a solid run game?

Travis Tuiloma

Lastly, lost in all the news of Taysom Hill, BYU may have possibly taken an even bigger loss with nose tackle Travis Tuiloma suffering a knee injury in the second quarter that will keep him out for 4-6 weeks. BYU gave up 180 total yards in the first half before the Tuiloma injury, and 260 in the second. The biggest difference was the amount of pressure put on Nebraska quarterback Tommy Armstrong, Jr.

Through the course of the second half, the Cougars began to put more and more pressure on the quarterback, forcing bad throws and getting a few big stops on third and short. It took a 42-yard Hail Mary pass to take down the favored Cornhuskers on the road and overcome the 14 point loss in the third quarter, but it happened.

* * *
Overall, it was an impressive outing for the Cougars. Anytime you beat a big name opponent like Nebraska on opening weekend in their own stadium without your starting quarterback, running back, nose tackle, safety, and linebacker -- it’s always a good sign. After seeing several disappointments from teams like Stanford, Arizona State, and even TCU and Auburn who had close games, BYU fans should be excited and optimistic for what lies in the upcoming weeks, especially with big games vs Boise State, UCLA, and Michigan to close out the opening month of this 2015 season.

A win Saturday would launch BYU into the top 25 heading into the Rose Bowl, and if BYU can escape with even a 3-1 start, the entire country will have their eyes on BYU as the team heads back to Provo with all the momentum in the world.

With Hill injured again, what can we expect this time around?

The play was typical Taysom Hill. A nice scramble that ended up in the end-zone for the Cougars. The celebration was muted, however, when a flag flew and it appeared that the play was being called back.

After the refs announced a penalty on BYU that was actually on Nebraska, the Cougars had six points -- and it will most likely be the last touchdown we will see from Hill. As diagnosed after the game, Hill ended his season, and probably his career, after suffering a Lisfranc injury to his right foot.

Greg Wrubell said it best in the post game when he said that this injury basically takes away the whole support system of the foot. This is when the injury is believed to have happened, thanks to video from Dave Noriega:

Without question the leadership, moxie and play-making abilities of Hill will be missed. His, dare I say "Grit," led the team to wins that would have otherwise been elusive. He pumped up his teammates and led them by example. The fans adored him, the players followed him, and coaches will miss him. In fact, Tom Holmoe and Chad Lewis both tweeted about him:

Chad Lewis would know: A Lisfranc injury ended up being what ended the pro-bowl tight end's career.

It stinks, and we'll miss Taysom.

However, the BYU Cougars still have 11 games left in the regular season. The team has no time to lament the loss of an icon. We saw the results of that last season. Now is the time for the Cougars to look towards Boise State and figure out the best way to put freshman quarterback Tanner Mangum in the best position to succeed -- both immediately and for the future. So what does the future look like for the Cougars without Hill?

Tanner Mangum

We were able to see glimpses of why Mangum was a heralded recruit and co-MVP of the Elite 11 with Jameis Winston. Mangum stepped up and threw 7-for-11 for 111 yards and the game-winning TD. Some of those yards came the first time Hill went to the locker room, completing a big first down pass on a drive that ended in points.

In addition to the efficient passing, Mangum also added five rushes for 26 yards. The way Mangum scrambled to buy time or gain yards looked crazy similar to John Beck. The #12 on the jersey didn't help. Mangum showed an uncanny ability to buy time and even make a play or two with his feet. He's no Taysom Hill, but BYU seemed set in not asking Hill to run all over the place anyway.

Playcalling

I would expect the play calling to be similar to what Coach Anae did last year when Christian Stewart took over for an injured Hill. This involved a return to the air attack with an occasional quarterback run called. In this scenario, the Cougars will need the running backs and offensive line to step up their game in order to keep the defense honest. If they can help establish the run game, Mangum should be fine and may in fact shine.

Anae showed last season he can do just fine calling plays for a gunslinger. But a little help from the run game would be nice.

Depth

With Mangum is the clear starter, true freshman Beau Hoge moves into the back-up role. True freshman walk on Koy Detmer, Jr. is the presumed third-string quarterback. This could change with sophomore McCoy Hill back on campus and starting to practice with the team. However, it isn't likely he will move up past third string in the near future.

BYU got lucky last season after Hill went down. Christian Stewart not only proved himself very capable, but also stayed healthy for the remainder of the season. We should hope the same for Hill. Mangum might be a redshirt freshman, but he's about four years older than his now-backup Hoge. Hoge is talented, no doubt, but very green as a QB. Him getting tons of reps this season would be a bad sign for the team's success, so let's hope he mostly has his day against Wagner.

Psychology

The loss of Hill is a hit to the offense, and to the psyche of the team. Last season, it seemed (and players and coaches later said) losing Hill was a proverbial gut-punch to the entire team, needing weeks to recover. This time, we should hope it doesn't derail the season for the Cougars. Having been through it before, the team seems much better prepared mentally for the loss. It doesn't make it stink any less, but I'm sure none of them enjoyed losing four straight games last season and remember what that felt like, too.

* * *

Will it be all roses? Probably not. But Mangum appears capable, and BYU has a litany of receivers he can throw to. If the run game can help Mangum transition, we may still see plenty of fun, winning football ahead of us.
